Within my practice I’ve experienced firsthand how working with the lunar cycle and the phases of the moon can help us to manifest our goals and check in with our emotional self-care. So the question is, how can we start to bring some of this lunar magic into our lives?
The good news is that there are so many ways we can connect to the magic of the moon. From being at home and practising our very own moon ritual (which can be as simple as taking some time to sit quietly at full moon) or booking a deep dive bespoke Moonology session with a practitioner, this is a connection that women have been celebrating in different ways for hundreds of years.
The simplest way to tune in is by looking at a clear night sky and noticing what phase the moon is in as she travels around the earth in her 29.5 day orbit. This is an opportunity to take a moment to reflect on where we are in the lunar cycle, what it represents and what this might mean for us.
The beauty of each of the phases is that they all represent something different, which can be related to our life experience and energy as we move through the cycle.
The Lunar Cycle and Essential Oils
What’s also fascinating is how you can use essential oils in conjunction with the phases of the moon to support your wellbeing. As we move through the lunar cycle, the properties of specific essential oils resonate with the different moon phases.
As you may already know, “essential oils impart their therapeutic effects on the body by being inhaled or absorbed into the skin.” When we diffuse essential oils, “chemicals in their scent can trigger physiological responses and affect our mental state” to bring about a sense of balance and wellbeing for our mind, body and spirit. (Neal’s Yard Remedies, 2016).
Below I’ve listed different essential oils that I like to diffuse for each lunar phase, based on my own learning and what I’ve found helpful in my Moonology practice.
Please make sure to do your research and/or speak with a qualified aromatherapist when choosing the right oils for you. Always read the info leaflet that comes with an essential oil before use. Consult your healthcare professional before using essential oils during pregnancy or if you have a medical condition.
Lunar Cycle Aromas
The new moon: This moon, hidden in darkness, marks the beginning of the cycle, representing an earthy time, more associated with quiet ‘yin’ energy. This is where we may wish to set (or seed) our intentions. Fresh supportive essential oils linked to renewal are helpful now.
Frankincense: promotes feelings of positivity, reduces anxiety and lifts the spirits.
Sandalwood: anti-inflammatory, this oil has a restorative effect on the mind and emotions, aiding sleep and igniting a passion for life.
Lavender: rejuvenating and soothing, this calming oil promotes restful sleep.
Essential oils for the waxing moon phases:
This is a time linked to growth and creativity, so uplifting and energising oils are helpful to keep us feeling upbeat and on track during our waxing moons. A drop of each of these essential oils in a diffuser is an energy boosting combo!
Rosemary: invigorating and energising, this essential oil can help with focus, memory and concentration! Much needed for pushing forward and helping us stay on track with our goals. (Note: not recommended if you have high blood pressure.)
Orange: uplifting and revitalising, this oil is perfect for diffusing when we need a boost of inspiration.
Lemon: refreshing and mood boosting, lemon stimulates the senses and clears the mind.
Full moon: Called by some the pinnacle of the lunar cycle, the full moon phase is a time of release, self-care and deep trust in the universe. I like to enjoy the magical aroma of my Lunar Wax Melts at this phase or I might use a couple of drops of one of these essential oils in my diffuser.
Jasmine: this warm, floral aroma is high prized. Uplifting and deeply relaxing, jasmine is considered to have aphrodisiac properties.
Ylang Ylang: this sweet, floral aroma is known for being a balancing and deeply relaxing essential oil.
Rose: anti-inflammatory and rejuvenating, rose has long been known for supporting women’s health. The heady scent of rose enhances wellbeing and can help to alleviate feelings of anxiety. (Note: I recommend avoiding use in pregnancy).
Essential oils for the waning moon phases:
Linked to sharing knowledge, meditation and healing, the waning phase is best supported by calming and grounding oils. I really enjoy using the Meditation blend from Neal’s Yard Remedies, but I also love adding a couple of drops to my diffuser of each of the following essential oils during this time.
Chamomile: soothing and calming, this oil is associated with strengthening immunity and promoting restful sleep.
Lavender: making its second appearance – this oil is just perfect for some quiet reflection due to its relaxing and calming properties.
