New Moon in Cancer – Feel all the Feelings

new moon in cancer solar eclipse

On Sunday 21st June, the cosmos will bring us a New Moon Eclipse in the astrological sign of Cancer. Although this will only be visible from certain parts of the globe, (not the UK unfortunately) energetically, eclipses are thought to instigate deep shifts in all of us.

Every New Moon is influenced by the astrological sign it falls in. Our beautiful moon is very at home in the sign of Cancer. Linked to feminine energy, deep nurturing, intuition, and the moon itself, Cancerian energy is very much focused on the home, family, and private emotions. This New Moon brings a focus on tuning into our intuition and trusting it. This is the time to shed the crab -like shell that we may have been protecting ourselves with and be completely honest with ourselves and those we trust about our desires, fears, and vulnerabilities.

The energy of this New Moon may feel extremely potent for some as it also brings an Annular Solar Eclipse. We experience an Annular Solar Eclipse when the sun, moon and earth are in alignment, leading to the moon blocking out almost all of the sun. For some of the lucky people that will witness this – the eclipse will appear like a ring of fire around the moon and promises to be an extremely powerful spectacle. So powerful in fact, that wearing protective eyewear is recommended to view a solar eclipse.

In astrological terms, eclipses are known for magnifying cosmic energy so the upcoming weekend may see us welcoming in some big energetic shifts. Think of a magical time for growth, transformation, and gateways to new opportunities opening up – this gives you an idea of how electric eclipse energy can be.

The summer solstice, the longest day of the year, often marked with festivals and rituals will also be happening at the weekend. This halfway point in the year gives us an important opportunity to review goals and think about how we would like the second half of the year to look, and from a holistic viewpoint supports the idea that this weekend has great potential for manifesting change and new beginnings.

The New Moon in Cancer

This New Moon can help you focus on channelling fresh energy into family and home, with its motherly, nurturing influence. It also symbolises new beginnings for self-care and self-nurture if you feel like your needs have been last on the list recently. You may wish to think about setting healthy boundaries and attending to your own needs under this moon. It is an ideal time to reflect on and accept our emotions, even the uncomfortable ones – so that we can move forward with a clear path into the lunar cycle.

New Moon Ritual – how to seed your intentions

The new moon is regarded as a potent time to send our intentions (or wishes) to the universe with the belief that offering them up will help them to manifest. This is not without inspired action on our part – manifestation magic still needs our assistance – but seeding our intentions and sending them out to the divine at the new moon can be the start of a powerful process.

There are many versions of moon rituals out in the ether, and I always recommend that people need to find out what works for them. However, there are some guidelines that I would recommend taking into consideration. I follow astrologer Yasmin Boland’s rituals so the ones that I create are based on what she suggests, and then I like to put my own twist on it.

Here are my top tips for a New Moon ritual:

Timing

The most powerful time to perform a ritual at new moon is ideally up to 8 hours after it has arrived but up to three days is ok. I like to start thinking about my intentions the night before the new moon, but this is a personal choice.

Set the Scene

  • Find a comfortable space where you know you won’t be disturbed.
  • Smudge the space or burn some incense to clear any unwanted energy.
  • Diffuse some essential oils. You may wish to use some oils that are relevant to whichever sign is influencing the New Moon.

An essential oil associated with Cancer is German Chamomile, a soothing and calming oil, akin to the qualities of Cancer. Refreshing and stimulating oils such as Bergamot and Orange can help to lift Cancerian energy from its watery depths, so depending on your preference, any of these would complement this New Moon.

  • Choose some crystals to work with, these might be associated with the New Moon or ones which you are just attracted at the time. Work with your intuition on this, this is your ritual.

Suggestions for crystals associated with the Cancer New Moon are Rose Quartz for restoring faith in love and trust in the universe, and Moonstone for nurturing, consoling, and supporting emotional needs.

Gratitude and Intention setting

  • Make a gratitude list of about 5 – 10 things (people or situations) that you have been grateful for in the last month and send love to the people on your list. It’s important here to bask in the gratitude for a few minutes.
  • Make a list of your intentions for the coming month. Visualise each one fully as having come true. Write an affirmation to support them.
  • Write down how you intend to work towards making each intention happen.

Release

  • Meditate for 10 – 15 minutes to calm the mind and then release attachment to your wishes by saying ‘ For the good of all or not at all.’

Once your seeds have been planted it is up to you to keep watering them. Think about how you can start moving towards your intentions over the next few weeks, safe in the knowledge that the universe is always listening.
